Originating from the mountainous regions above the Mediterranean coastline and the Tigris River. The dance was first practiced in Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Palestine, Iraq, and some tribes from nearby territories. Dabke tells a story and keeps us close to our heritage. The movements are strong, the people connected and in unison and the energy and message clear. Over generations the dabke dance has become, for some, a form of creative artistic protest although it was originally used as a tool to unite the community to help build and fix homes. Palestinian Dabke is close to my heart, my knowledge in the art-form was passed down from my own family, friends and teachers and has revolutionized into a symbol of love, life, and struggle. In this class we will share joy, sweat and potentially a little bit of struggle as we move through some Palestinian Dabke movement and heartfelt stomping choreography. We are sending a simple message of love and unity across the world by virtually locking arms and interlacing hands, stopping the ground in unison, chanting and singing! Yalla let’s Dabke! I look forward to dancing with you! JANELLEISSIS.COM | @JBELLYBURN
